A Sun-Soaked Girls’ Trip Through Sri Lanka
Some trips feel like postcards. Others feel like stories you will be telling forever. Our (me and 3 friends) trip to Sri Lanka was absolutely the second kind. Colorful, vibrant, and full of moments that felt both joyful and meaningful.
Elephants, Cinnamon, and a Slower Rhythm
One of our most unforgettable stops was the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Seeing elephants up close, watching them move together so calmly, was one of those quietly emotional experiences that stays with you.
We also visited a cinnamon plantation, where we learned how true Sri Lankan cinnamon is grown and processed. Warm, earthy, and fragrant, it made us appreciate how deeply connected Sri Lankan culture is to the land.
History That You Can Feel
Sri Lanka holds space for its history in a very real way. We visited the Tsunami Museum and the Tsunami Honganji Viharaya, both sobering and important reminders of the 2004 tsunami. These visits added depth to our trip and reminded us that travel is also about understanding and respect.
Later, we explored the iconic Galle Fort, where colonial architecture meets ocean views. We wandered the streets, shopped for beautiful saris, browsed local boutiques, and yes, bought the famous elephant poo paper. A must, honestly.
Beaches, Fruit, and King Coconut Water
We spent a lot of time by the beaches, soaking in the views rather than swimming. The currents in Sri Lanka are strong, and the ocean demands respect. Even without getting in the water, the scenery alone was breathtaking.
Every single day included fresh tropical fruit and chilled king coconut water, cracked open right in front of us. It became a daily ritual and one of those simple joys that made the trip feel indulgent without excess.
We also saw the traditional stilt fishermen, delicately balanced above the water. It felt like watching a living piece of Sri Lanka’s heritage.
Rest, Relaxation, and Ayurvedic Wellness
No girls’ trip is complete without a little pampering, and Sri Lanka delivered. We all got Ayurvedic massages, and they were incredible. Deeply relaxing, it was the perfect way to unwind between sightseeing days.
We stayed at a RIU Resort Sri Lanka, where beach views, slow mornings, and long conversations came naturally.
And then there was the grand finale: staying at the historic Galle Face Hotel. The ocean views here are unreal. Watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean from such an iconic hotel felt cinematic and timeless.
Getting Around + Feeling Safe
Getting around Sri Lanka was surprisingly easy. We regularly used Uber and PickMe to order tuk-tuks, which were both affordable and efficient. It was one of the most cost-effective ways to explore, especially in cities.
Most importantly, we never felt unsafe while we were there. As a group of women traveling together, that peace of mind mattered, and Sri Lanka exceeded our expectations.
Shopping and Dining
For shopping and casual dining, we spent a lot of time at One Galle Face Mall. It became our go-to spot for meals. It was the perfect balance to the more traditional parts of our itinerary.
The Practical Side (Because It Matters)
Sri Lanka is a closed-currency country, which is important to know before you go. Getting there was the biggest investment. Our flight with Turkish Airlines was expensive, but once we arrived, our money stretched far. Food, transportation, shopping, wellness treatments, and experiences were incredibly affordable.
Final Thoughts
Sri Lanka gave us culture, history, rest, adventure, and connection all in one trip. It was a perfect girls’ getaway, rich in texture and color, balanced with beach views, wellness, and laughter.
This was not just a vacation. It was a memory we will carry with us for a very long time.
